Havarti Stuffed French Toast

Recipe #319585 | 16 min | 10 min prep | add private note

French toast is often thought of as sweet, but many people like a savory version, here in the United States and in other countries. Here is a version I believe you will enjoy! I actually found this on a Walmart card in the grocery section!

SERVES 2 (change servings and units)

Ingredients

Directions

  1. 1
Beat eggs, milk, mustard and salt together in a large shallow bowl. Set aside.
  2. 2
Divide Havarti cheese between 2 slices of bread. Top with remaining bread.
  3. 3
Melt butter in a large skillet. Gently dip assembled sandwiches into egg mixture, one side at a time. Slip into skillet.
  4. 4
Cook over medium heat 3-5 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  5. 5
Cut into quarters and serve with currant jelly if desired. Enjoy!

We enjoyed this for today's brunch. Easy to assemble and very tasty. I omitted the currant jelly (prefer savoury to sweet fillings) so we added a slice of ham. Delicious! And certainly something I'll make again for a weekend brunch. Next time I think I'll try it with sardines. Made for Newest Zaar Tag. Thanks for sharing it, Sharon123.

We made these with three different cheeses: 1 sandwich with mozzarella for the daughter who dislikes havarti. She dipped it in spaghetti sauce and liked the recipe better than her sister and I. I made one with plain havarti, and another with dill havarti. We didn't use the optional currant jam, but I think the sandwich needs something. I might try some chopped sundried tomatoes in the filling, or maybe a sundried tomatoe mayo for dipping. Or maybe add pesto to the filling? (PS--Don't anybody tell my kids this had mustard in it!)
